Mark-Room — Overlap Too Late
A boat that was clear astern at the zone gets no mark-room from an inside overlap she obtains only after entering the zone.
Mark-room is locked in at the moment the first boat reaches the zone. A boat that was clear astern then is not entitled to mark-room even if she later ranges up and gets an inside overlap inside the zone (rule 18.2(a)(2) — and the giving boat's obligation continues even when a new overlap begins). The entitled boat keeps her room; the late boat must keep clear and round behind. To earn the inside, establish the overlap clearly before the zone.

How it interacts with other rules

An overlap that exists when the first boat reaches the zone does entitle the inside boat to room.
- Rule 18.2 — Mark-Room — Clear Ahead at the Zone · see also
The other side of the same coin: clear ahead at the zone is entitled to room.
