Committee-Boat End & Barging
Start at the favoured boat end for clean air and the freedom to go right — but never barge in between a leeward boat and the committee boat, where you have no rights.
When the committee-boat end is favoured it gives you clean air and the freedom to tack onto port and head right straight after the gun, so it is worth reserving a spot there early. You set up just below the layline to the committee boat with a small gap to leeward, hold your lane, and punch off the line at speed. A 'barger' is a boat that comes reaching down the line from above and tries to squeeze into the gap between you and the committee boat — but it has no room and no rights, so it must duck behind your transom. Hold your lane and the barger is simply shut out.

What to call out
- Approach from below the committee layline and reserve your spot early, because the boat end fills up and latecomers get shut out.
- Never force in between a leeward boat and the committee boat, because that is barging and you have no rights — you must give room or duck.
- If you get jammed, start a length late at the very back of the boat, because that keeps your air clear and your freedom to tack onto port.
- Hit the line at speed with a small hole to leeward, because you need room to bear away and accelerate onto a clean lane.
