Double-Tack Into a Lane
Stuck in a boat's dirty air with no room to bear away? Throw a quick double tack — out onto port to clear the bad air, then back onto starboard into a clean lane.
Off the line you can end up pinned just behind and to leeward of a faster lane, choking in another boat's dirty air with no gap to bear into. Grinding it out only loses more — disturbed air robs an Optimist of speed every second you sit in it. The fix is a quick double tack: tack onto port and cross a few lengths behind the boat ahead to get fully clear of its bad air, then tack straight back onto starboard into a clean lane you can see opening to the side. You give up a boatlength or two in the two tacks, but clean air earns it back and then some.

What to call out
- Tack out the moment your lane is dead, because sitting in bad air only gets worse the longer you wait.
- Sail far enough on the new tack to fully clear the bad air before you tack back, because half-clearing it just re-stalls you.
- Accept the small double-tack cost, because clean air gives the speed back quickly while a pinned boat keeps bleeding distance.
- Aim the re-tack at an open lane you already spotted, because tacking blindly can land you straight in someone else's wash.
